The bi-annual Palio is a brisk, bareback horse race staged around the elegant Piazza del Campo in the heart of Siena. Taking place every 2 July and 16 August, the race features 10 horses and jockeys representing local “contrade” (traditional neighbourhoods) who compete for the Palio, or banner, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The stunning square is lined with spectator seating where onlookers can bask in the costumed pageantry before the race. After the pageantry and one the race is complete, massive feasts are enjoyed in each neighbourhood with locals dining on long tables that can stretch for blocks on the cobbled side streets. The Palio is a magical and historic festival, the ultimate way to experience Siena in the summer time.
